Wilhelmina Carney, age 86, passed away on September 23, 2020, at her residence in Bronx, NY. Wilhelmina was born on April 28, 1934, in Steubenville, OH. She is preceded in death by her mother, Freddie Mae Jones, and her father, David Carney. She is survived by a wealth of extended family and lifelong friends
She was a retired registered nurse who lived a full life. She earned her Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing at the Bronx Community College. She had a certificate of Practical Nursing from the Montefiore Hospital Center and a certificate in Gerontology from Marymount College in NYC. She was a member of the National Black Nurses Association, the New Black Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, and was a board member of the former New York Counties Registered Nurses Association, district 13 retiree group. In 2009, she received the Lavinia L Dock Distinguished Service Award. She was a member of the New York State Nurses Association and a chapter chairperson for the Terence Cardinal Health Care Center.
She was an advocate for seniors and was a longtime member and Medicare trainer for AARP Chapter # 4497. She was a member of the Mosholu Montefiore Senior Center and the American Legion. She donated to a multitude of charities. She was strong, determined, independent, generous, kind, and a friend to all whose lives she touched. Wilhelmina loved to travel and spend time with friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2020, at Union Cemetery, 1720 Sunset Blvd, Steubenville, OH 43952.
